THE MAUDSLAY INITIATIVE The Maudslay Initiative is a project under OSCEng management which will seek to change the way engineering and manufacturing industries operate. The essence of the Maudslay Initiative is the establishment of a link between the 'risk' that relates to the design, production, construction, installation, operation, maintenance or decommissioning of an engineering asset, product, component, system, process or structure and the competence required of any person involved with them. 'Risk' will be quantified in the context of the Maudslay Initiative on a linear 'Scale of Consequence', a measure of the outcomes if the asset, product, component, system, process or structure should fail. In practice, the Maudslay Initiative concept is simple: in order to work with an engineering asset, product, component, system, process or structure having a particular measure on the relevant industry-agreed Scale of Consequence, the person concerned would need to have achieved, or be supervised by someone having, an appropriate level of competence. The Maudslay Initiative will be industry-led and driven by industry-identified and agreed requirements relating to competence and consequence. However, membership will be open to any organisation having an involvement with engineering or manufacturing and the issues of health and safety, 'risk' and individual competence. It will be a self-financing project, with the majority of funding derived from membership subscription fees. A Manifesto for the Initiative has been published, giving full details of how it will operate and how industry and others can participate. (Note: the Manifesto is available as a pdf file. If you are not familiar with using pdf files, please refer to our short guide. You will need to use either Adobe Acrobat, full program, or Adobe Reader for access. If you do not have Adobe Reader you can download the current version free of charge from www.adobe.com) Further details of the launch of the Maudslay Initiative can be found in the News section.
